Attitude, balance, Purposely Living, significance, using silence to restore balance

Silence is restorative

I’ve found this to be a very powerful truth.

I can talk and talk and find no healing, nor resolution, but as soon as I shut my mouth, open my mind and keep my heart reasonable ( mind you, I didn’t say … pure because honestly who has a pure heart? Let’s be real).

Good against evil

We try to be as pure as we can by balancing good against evil, and that’s the best place to be in the balance where you are trying. I am scared to death of the extremes. They both create chaos in this world.

I am writing to release the tension I’ve accumulated over the last several day. Tough and heightened tensions I don’t usually experience, especially Seems like I’ve not been able to find simple solutions to any one problem I’m currently addressing. Saving grace is my positive perseverance and attitude.

So I find the positive my immersing myself into complete silence sometimes for hours. No radio, music, other voices, magazines, books, and my computer or phone.

I seek answers in silence along with peace for my own wellbeing. Without my peace I am not myself so I seek restorative silence.

Over Eating

Overeater

I am guilty yes!

Practically all my life sadly.

Perhaps starting with my grandfather in particular

His favorite mantra to get us to wipe our plates clean was about all the starving children in Africa etc.

Why why why???Photo credit

Now, I work out, well I walk a lot with some very light exercises in between.

But I use to do all the super aerobics, calisthenics etc. When I realized it was just all hype. Exercise is good, but the key is controlling your intake of foods.

This was mePhoto credit

Lessening or removing sugars and starches is key to maintenance. If you can not, then balancing your intake may be the best option.

I choose to exclude animal products from my diet as best as I can. Since I don’t cook all my meals daily I’ve found it can be challenging if I don’t have good partners to assist me in my endeavor. Case in point, I purchased a meal just yesterday and the vendor was aware I do not eat meat. I laughed when I discovered some meat in one of the portions. No biggie. They will learn slowly I guess. No need for anger nor stress.

Addictions can be anythingPhoto credit

I don’t smoke and I consume nearly no alcohol. I say nearly because from time to time, during a Blue Moon, I do partake. My food compulsions were akin to any other addictions. Some smoke use drugs, shop, sleep, use social media, sex, work. These are all things which we oftentimes do in excess. The key? Detox, fast, remove the urge and recognize your triggers.

I think of my long term health and wellbeing, how I feel now and how much better I can feel with simple lifestyle changes and choices.

I would prefer to be able to walk for exercise than do no exercise at all. Sometimes I do light calisthenics just to remind my muscles deep within that they are still alive. I am still here and challenging them to be stronger.

I enjoy my workouts because I can be present in my health choices, even if I do eat more than I should now its not because I’m being forced to anymore or tricked. I do it because I love my food choices and I know I’ll be stomping the sidewalk like a beast, shortly after.

Me stomping lolPhoto credit

I choose good health because I want quality of life. I want to make waking up each day worthwhile and as painless as possible to my body.

Health is my gift to myself

Living Color

My last two weeks

In Living Color feature photo credit

I oftentimes am amazed , fascinated intrigued about all the happenings around me that I don’t get to see, taste, smell (well let me take that back. In New York City I experience too many fragrances…jeeshhhh.🤐

So I’ll post my images in no particular date order but these are all from the last two weeks or thereabout. Most are my original photos. If you use them, please give me credit. Thankies🤗

I’ll start with myself enroute to work this morning…Happy Friday and have s great weekend.🎉🎉🎉

Sorry…this is not my original photo, but it spoke volumes to me. I’d be interested in what it says to you?

I found this little sunflower gem on my way to work this week. Thought if my neighbor Jackie. She’s an avid gardener and she grows beautiful sunflowers.

Early morning commute and this little tike had to drink a soda. I felt for her.

Labor Day meal prep. Caribbean people love their foods. This is Accra, which can generally be eaten with anything and anytime of day but many prefer it at breakfast. Typically eaten with fry bake, or johnny bake, but rice and a choka is good as well.

Homelessness in New York is disparaging. I shot this chap at the Prospect stop in Brooklyn. MTA what’s happening here?

My mom being Vogue I just did her hair😘

Again not an original pic but Trinidad and Tobago, my home country celebrated our 56th Independence August 31, 2018.

In one of my post earlier this week I posted about the heart. I featured this young man in the hat. Don’t know him but he was very kind. Got up and gave his seat to an elderly man. So sweet.

Construction workers need a shout out too. This patient lady works by the bridge on 3rd Avenue

Stinky garbage day. This is what sanitation pick up day is like in NYC – blocked roadways, lots of delays and traffic due to sanitation, delayed MTA buses and school buses and many people running late for work due to Dept of Sanitation.

Cuteness not🤕

Found a shoe I really liked at Payless but opted not to buy it. I don’t need another shoe, but it was so cute and practical 😍

Picture of this whale I found which captures my spirit. I love whales.

Not sure what this was for or about but I loved it. Found it on a family members WhatsApp profile. Tee hee.

Well I think that wraps it up. I hope you enjoy. Have a restful and enjoyable weekend. Just a final word. More to myself….peace unto you.

Walking is easier than Limbo

Walking again

Now that the gruesome summer heat has subsided somewhat I’ve resumed my walking once again. Walking is absolutely hands down, one of my greatest passions. It’s not limbo so it’s quite easy. Don my walking clothes and I’m out the door.

Even though I’m musing while I’m walking. I do have a health app active on my phone which keeps tabs on my heart rate, peds per day, stairs climbed and distances or miles walked.

I check it daily and try to improve on the previous day. Sometimes however it’s just important for me to get out, get some good old vitamin D and walk.

I walk and I muse about everything. The soca, calypso, and reggae music in my ears beating out all the weeks and months events and helping me to synchronize my thoughts into some new thing for the next post or musing.

Shemika Charles Limbo Queen

Sometimes I write them and let them marinate for weeks. These are the ones which I go back and add tempo and more notes to enhance and enrich the readers experience.

My one hope is you enjoy the full experience of my walking. Not only does it improve my health, physical and mental well being, but it creates this great venue for relationship and exchange of ideas We’ve found with each other.

Twenty Five Minutes

Twenty Five Minutes on a bus

Kedella met handsome on her way to work one wet September morning. Her usual commute where She was crossing the highway somewhere by Eastern Parkway and Utica Avenue where she boarded the already packed bus. She said good morning to the bus driver as a courtesy every morning.

This morning was different for some reason. He looked like his life was about to be over, so Kedella asked “are you ok Handsome? You don’t seem to be your usual chippy self this morning.”

This is how she found out her bus driver of 5 years was married, had six children and about to lose his home. All she could say was take it easy and remember the Lord does not give us more than we can bear.

He admitted he needed more than that right now because he had been holding on and holding on, nothing seemed to be changing or improving. He admitted it was tiring waking up day after day, going to work, being dog tired every day, can’t even take a vacation because the hours are necessary to deal with the financial crisis in which he found himself.

Depression may affect

The silverlining? At least this kind lady, a passenger whom he had become acquainted over the last five years. She always had a smile and a kind word. She actually stopped and took notice, recognized there was something different about him on this day.

Truthfully ? He wanted to give up, but this dear lady turned things around by her unselfish act of kindness. She didn’t offer money or sex. There was absolutely zero flirting. All she offered was her time. 25 minutes from her first stop on Utica and Eastern Parkway to her final stop at Glenwood Avenue. The ride was longer this morning due to rain and traffic. But it was just nice to know in twenty five minutes a life has been transformed.

If you only imagine someone is in need of help, be the one to throw them a lifeline. Sometimes all it takes is s few minutes of your time.

How Does Social Media fit into your world?

Social Media

I love social media!! Period!

The sheer ability to reach out to family, friends, long lost classmates, and even complete strangers who happen to share similar interests, over great distances, oceans, and even continents. I don’t know what advances have been made in space because I haven’t reviewed any NASA information. But, I will be soon since the very idea of being able to send instant message to space is revolutionary.

Negatives

While I know there are negatives- it can be time consuming, even disrupt interaction With real relationships in our lives. Some even spend so much time on social media, they have no real relationship. Others spend time filtering themselves so you really have no idea what’s real and what’s not.

Positives and Balance

But, it is important for me to highlight the positives and emphasize a balance can be met. Definitely!

Really? Yes, Really!!

I do not start my day with Social Media. That’s my biggest positive. When I open my eyes each day my praise and attention goes to my Higher Power…acknowledging and thanking God for my life, my love ones and all my blessings.

Secondly, I take care of myself, preparing myself for my day, getting chores done etc. if my chores aren’t done, I don’t reward myself with social media.

Thirdly, I take breaks from social media just to reboot, get perspective and just have me time. It may be a week or a few months. Depends how I feel. From time to time I may skip a couple days.

Lastly, social media isn’t all that important for me to disconnect from real people, real conversations and connections. I make a point to enjoy real life daily and not to have technology be all consuming . As Marshall McLuhan author of “Understanding Media” points out in the first chapter of his book :

Beyond what we think we are doing with technologies like smartphones, there is also the reality of what is happening to us when we use them. In short, what happens to us is the social message. This social “message” is also being sent to us at the same time as we use our devices for other purposes. We may not be initially aware of what is happening and how society is changing. But, over time, the social effects of the new technology seep, at least partially, into social awareness. Usually, this happens as older people point out to the younger ones how social habits have changed in their lifetime.

I’m a loner by nature who loves people. Abit of an oxymoron. But that’s my reality. I’m not a social person but I can be when called to be.

No Social Media – #unplug

Sometimes that little voice in my head gives me insight.

Only God

Call it intuition, instincts, I say it’s God. Whatever your words are for it.

But sometimes you need to clear all the junk and free your mind, your thoughts and ground zero yourself do what you can to jump start or elevate your thinking.

One week social media free

A good start is social media. Try it for one week. Do something else for one week and come back and tell me how you’ve evolved. How have the actual people in your life benefitted.

There is only one me

There’s only one me

I seem to reflect on this one thought ever so often.

The first reason being, it is a fact.

There’s only one me.

Secondly, the earlier in life we begin to understand, internalize and more importantly accept this fact, so much more fall into place for us and our authenticity allows us to have peace and many things suddenly make more sense. For one, you accept all of your imperfections and you relate and communicate as you view you view yourself, as a diamond, genuine and priceless. Secondly, how others view you does not fluster you because you are you to yourself and that’s uncompromising and refreshing.

Thirdly, there is a tremendous amount of power and freedom harnessed in acceptance of oneself as you are.

Fourthly, but not the last, those around you appreciate you more because you’ve accepted yourself, are comfortable within that framework of who you are and that makes you a more enjoyable and loveable person.

After that one, genuine, authentic you…there won’t be another. The mold can only be cut once so enjoy every moment you can so you can laugh and smile at yourself with others and at the memories each day. Not the end of your days.

Discipline as a Core Behavior

Discipline as a core behavior

I believe everything we do must demonstrate some form of discipline – working, school, resting and even having fun.

Blow with the Wind

Imagine going about life, no rhyme or reason. If we blow with the wind who knows where we will end up and more importantly “how” we will end up.   We  should certainly want to have control  over our destinations and our state of being. I want my hard earned work to mean something and not to be scattered with the wind and trampled on by passers by.

Control your destiny

wind blowing trees drawing

We all must have something which sustains is, whether that is a form of business or employment. Either or we have to have a disciplined approach to making money and consequently paying bills, keeping a roof over our heads, sustenance or feeding and nourishing our bodies. If we were not disciplined enough to work then none of the above would be possible and therefore we will cease to exist.

Same for school. Some of us are better and some are worse but in all we have to be disciplined to study, follow the course work, do exams, and interact and regurgitate in a classroom setting. This discipline also determines your professional outcome and potentially type of earning power.

Do-you-need-rest

Do you need rest too – Andy Lee

If you are a real disciplinarian, you would need a much needed break periodically. That in itself takes discipline. You must recognize your limits and allow yourself to break, relax and come back refreshed. This is what discipline looks like .

How we Deal with our Pain

Pain can be staggering if you aren’t equipped to handle it, because sometimes it isn’t just physical. It’s a mental state which can migrate to a physical state, causing much distress if you do not know how to manage how you think.

We can counter most of what how we think negatively with a positive but I’ve experienced personally such overwhelming negatives that it altered my chemical state. It could have been disastrous but I was equipped and sought help outside myself, I found ways to make my negatives positives. Small ways initially, insignificant things.

Whatever makes you happy and fires your brain use, as long as you aren’t creating more negatives for you or others.

Fire on the subway MTA/LIRR

State of disgust

LIRR seats

I take the Long Island Rail Road to work mostly. I detest the putrid trains. The vagrants, the stench, the vermin, the utter sewer we pay for the privilege and honor of commuting daily.  Got on the LIRR this morning and I am thrown into a perpetual state of disgust, reminding me of the very subway trains I have tried to not use, unless I absolutely must.

What am I sitting in really????

I feel like I am about to lose my tummy. The smell is so bad in car 7367 on the 5:52 commuter from Jamaica to Atlantic that I’m sitting here wondering if I’m possibly sitting in the barf?

Who has it worse?

Fire on MTAs tracks

When will this system ever get better?  I See people run on and off the trains at some stations, armed with brooms and shovel.  They look as disgruntled as the commuters who have to ride on the swill.  Who has it worse, the commuters or the employees?  I guess it’s equanimity but I pay to ride and I expect the trains as well as its environs to be clean, smelling decent, and not roach, rats and other vermin infested😰😰😰😰😰 UUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

NYC rats out of control
I started writing this post at 6:50 am.  It is now 6:59 pm and I’m still super irritated at the state of our mass transit system.

Commuting back home versus commuting to work does not hold a special place for me as it should, and that disturbs me terribly.  Every experience I have, especially when I invest in it, like I do with the very expensive MTA cost, should have some level of comfort.  Bah humbug!!!!!  Why do I have to complain like a hag over something this simple?  We pay  to ride, shouldn’t they make the experience  more palatable?

Hope tomorrow brings a cleaner ride🤔. I can hope can I ?

Have you lived your best life today!? – 3

Communication
Some people like to talk and some to write or type. Whichever it may be, one should use it effectively for communicating true feelings, not nagging or manipulation. There is no place in relationships for either. Also never be evasive. If you don’t have an answer or are not ready to divulge one, simply say so. But,be prepared to have a ready answer available.   Never leave anyone hanging. This is just another way you live your best day by being true to yourself, yet reliable, trustworthy and earnest to others.
Purposely living

Simply living day by day without some kind of plan and purpose may seem ok in the short term. But not having real commitments and no real responsibilities, living willy nilly gets you no where.  No goals accomplished, no personal growth and nothing to look back on to appreciate.

Your day must be filled with purpose and it doesn’t hurt if you did at least one thing for yourself. Something as simple as giving yourself a day off from tasks. Just getting off your feet and resting your body, praising it for keeping you going, and please be thankful for your capabilities, what ever they may be.

Our lives must always have room for purpose and plans because without purpose there is no plans and vice versa. One cannot exist without the other. This is the beginning of your best day, taking care of you. If you don’t take care of you now it would be difficult for you to do it later.

Something  you have to consider is, who can you take care of you when you are down?   Your service to others will not be possible if you are incapacitated. So begin your best day with you.

Partners

Having a partner with whom you are committed is great but guess what?? How can you share your best self with them if you are not exercising your best self? Even your children if you have them, will suffer. You can’t love them the way you should or may want to. You can’t play with them if you are not at full capacity  when you do things with them. You are listless before the day is halfway finished. You are sleepy during the day, depressed maybe? Lost interest in some if not all activities. You are not eating nutritious meals so that your body is in balance. Next step weight gain . A big no no if you understand the human biorhythm. Weight spirals your body into another level of stress. Is this living your best day? Your best day should be balanced. Food and exercise definitely go together for a healthier you.

Balance

What does balance mean? What does balance look like? For each person it’s as unique as the person. It may mean taking a walk before you start your day. For some it may mean a jog, a swim, calisthenics, workout at your gym or if you please a great make out session with your partner. It’s entirely up to each person but you must absolutely start your best day this way. Kicking your metabolism into health zone also means balance so eating the right things, getting non sugary fluids into your temple is equally important to the balance you seek. It’s not rocket science. Your best day is elementary and easy to do if you can slow your roll and enjoy yourself . You only have one chance to take care of your body so the sooner you start, the better.
Grateful

Work and employment means something different for each person. Some people are content with salaries in the range of 25k and others need it to be 100k while others need it to be millions and that one percent in the billions. It is an individual ambition and one cannot look at the other and be critical of what satisfies monetary wise. Happiness is relative.  In order for us to live our best day  also includes enjoying the fruits of your labor and just being supremely grateful for gainful employment.

Joy and Peace

Having a hobby and enjoying doing something that lightens your heart and brings joy and peace to your spirit is essential. It doesn’t have to cost you.  Gardening, decorating, baking, cooking, hiking are things you can do with resources you already have. If you enjoy talking to friends and family this is great just be careful about too much personal information going out and also keeping conversations at a limit so you aren’t spending all your time sitting in one spot or just being a couch potato. Keep your body in tune with your mind because remember keeping your body in motion is essential to balance.
Love unique you

Loving yourself is just as potent as loving someone else. When we all realize this little secret in life we will love more passionately, hate less and respect ourselves and others. This is another aspect to our best day.

So as you can see, living your best day it isn’t one dimensional. It’s a multi dimensional purposeful life. We have to be aware and we have to strive for this each day. It cannot be well this person is like that so I’ll just be like that too. You can do much better than that. You are as unique as the sun and the moon. One comes up during the day and the other comes out at night. However, as unique as they each are, they do provide essential services we cannot live without. They are both unique and valuable. Just like you.

Begin with love in yourself, seek balance, take care of your body because you and you only have one body in this life. There aren’t any replacement part for the originals. Love like the sayings says there is no tomorrow because tomorrow may never come and finally believe in something which brings you joy to your best day.

Image

Good Morning,

It’s been 8 months since I posted to my blog.  Life has had many ups and downs, and I’ve had to choose my activities carefully.  I’ve been trying to take things and life easy. I work very hard, and things haven’t been the way I would normally like them to be, but thus is life.  School has been stressful, especially with financial, and  health issues always looming.  But, I am so overcoming, and  I’m back!!!

My oldest son Augustus is still in a place of bondage literally, and fighting for his life. My prayers for him are for guidance and ordering of his steps for improved decision making and quality of life.

I became a new grandmom back in August of 2012, so now it’s official my grand daughter is now 1 year.  I just love her.

Image

My daughter is growing and I’m praying to God for direction in her life.  She’s such an amazing young woman, so much strength, character and an amazing gift of artistry. Let’s see how she figures it out.

My youngest son has had a few challenges but he seems to be hanging on strong.  I can’t wait to see where his mind leads him.

I moved to a temporary residence in June 2013 until I can find permanent housing, but I have a great job and I love my employer and the people with whom I work.

Joel Osteen posted the following to Facebook this morning, and I believe it:

Sometimes heaven can be silent. But in those silent times something powerful is happening deep inside. God is stretching you. You’re developing a greater confidence in Him.

This was Joel Osteen yesterday:

In spite of how you feel, in spite of what’s been passed down in your family line, every day you need to declare, “Everything about me is getting better and better.”

Having had two days off from work (Thursday & Friday) for the Jewish New Year -Rosh Hashanah, I commented on Facebook as follows:

I have two days off from work so I’m using it to take care of some necessary chores, also to get some much needed rest. I need prayer, for those prayer warriors out there (you know who you are). God knows my needs, so just pray and ask God for direction and He will let you pray appropriately for my needs.

Please enjoy your day and love the ones you are with. They may not be here tomorrow. Each day is so precious, so enjoy your life and enjoy the people in your life.

Remember words are POWERFUL!!! So, be careful of the words you allow to come out of your mouths. They can transform your life or break your life.

Don’t allow others to have power over you. Remember, you are a child of God and only you can be King or Queen of your destiny. I’m preaching to the choir now!!!! Good gracious me!!!!

Have a great day Y’all!!! Luv and kisses!!

Yesterday I had an opportunity to speak with my dear friend Keira.  Keira is the type of person you can call, and she listens and prays.   She has an interesting Non-Profit called C.O.N.N.E.C.T. Ministry in Knoxville, Tennessee.  I would love to be able to help because it involves helping people in the community connect to resources they may not necessarily find other places.  People with financial difficulty, homelessness, addictions, and sometimes despair arrive at her door, and her first approach is always prayer.  After that she tries to deal with the physical and emotional needs of the individual and their families.  Keira has other external resources she can approach to make the services she provide all encompassing, to include transportation assistance, rent, joblessness, etc.    I had the good fortune to work with her and enjoyed the experience tremendously.  In fact, the experience was life changing for me.

I cannot forget my friend Caroline who has had a tremendous impact on my life as well.  She has been realizing her lifelong dream of establishing an orphanage in Ghana for orphans and widows.  She recently took a trip to Ghana and did just that.  I think she is truly awesome and I pray for her success.
