Over Eating


I am guilty yes!

Practically all my life sadly.

Perhaps starting with my grandfather in particular

His favorite mantra to get us to wipe our plates clean was about all the starving children in Africa etc.

Now, I work out, well I walk a lot with some very light exercises in between.

But I use to do all the super aerobics, calisthenics etc. When I realized it was just all hype. Exercise is good, but the key is controlling your intake of foods.

Lessening or removing sugars and starches is key to maintenance. If you can not, then balancing your intake may be the best option.

I choose to exclude animal products from my diet as best as I can. Since I don’t cook all my meals daily I’ve found it can be challenging if I don’t have good partners to assist me in my endeavor. Case in point, I purchased a meal just yesterday and the vendor was aware I do not eat meat. I laughed when I discovered some meat in one of the portions. No biggie. They will learn slowly I guess. No need for anger nor stress.

I don’t smoke and I consume nearly no alcohol. I say nearly because from time to time, during a Blue Moon, I do partake. My food compulsions were akin to any other addictions. Some smoke use drugs, shop, sleep, use social media, sex, work. These are all things which we oftentimes do in excess. The key? Detox, fast, remove the urge and recognize your triggers.

I think of my long term health and wellbeing, how I feel now and how much better I can feel with simple lifestyle changes and choices.

I would prefer to be able to walk for exercise than do no exercise at all. Sometimes I do light calisthenics just to remind my muscles deep within that they are still alive. I am still here and challenging them to be stronger.

I enjoy my workouts because I can be present in my health choices, even if I do eat more than I should now its not because I’m being forced to anymore or tricked. I do it because I love my food choices and I know I’ll be stomping the sidewalk like a beast, shortly after.

I choose good health because I want quality of life. I want to make waking up each day worthwhile and as painless as possible to my body.

Everything in life is ordered. They are seasonal, changing constantly and redesigning themselves for survival.

You and I are the same way. There’s no removing ourselves from the dynamic. We have to go with the flow, listen to our body rhythms and actually understand what it wants us to do and follow through and keep ourselves in order.

Eat balanced, consume things which will enrich your cells not hurt them. Hard lesson for us to learn until we actually have one foot in the grave. But if we keep a healthy balance and keep our bodies in motion we are going to enjoy quality of life. It’s not always perfect but it will improve significantly.

We are what we eat …think about that.

Illness and ailments throughout history are all indicative of what we are consuming. What we are eating and what we are drinking.

If you are being conscious about your body and your future self – health, you would be very wary about what the food and drug administration markets as food and medicine.

Cost of foods we eat

I’ve eaten bananas, avocados and cucumbers all my life, but in 1989 I started a journey of food allergies.

My first allergy attack was right after my first son was born. I woke up one morning, approximately two weeks after his birth, started preparing my breakfast to include a simple banana and oatmeal. That was my first attack, to include throwing up and waves of nausea.

My second and more serious attack was with avocado. I prepared a salad for dinner and had quite a surprise at my repulsive response. I thought it was temporary or maybe the chick peas I had combined with the salad wasn’t a good combination.

So the best goes on and on

So, trying over and over again to try eating avocados different ways and still having the same revolting results made me research more about the import and export of foods and vegetables. Lo behold I should find out that the there are compounds to preserve the foods in transportation which may be causing me to feel sick.

Now Food and Drug Administration FDA May admit that they are there but they will also say the quantity is negligible. Now, my body does not agree with this at all, in fact My body rejects it.

I also had a more recent issues with a cucumber. It’s a singular and recent happening so the jury is still out on this one. I’ll keep you updated because I love cucumber and I eat them whenever.

The most fascinating allergy of all was Lisinopril a medication I take for high blood pressure. I was taking it for several years and not feeling so great. Had several emergency room visits for stomach cramps, chest pains, vomiting and was even diagnosed by two doctors as having gall stones. I was prepped and ready for surgery when the day before the anesthesiologist refused to allow me into surgery unless my pressure went down. She sent me to emergency where they wanted to admit me after more than 7 hours of tests, and call in a cardiologist …Imagine that!

I said no and had them release me home on my own and against advise of doctors or rather interns. Not knocking anyone but I am very careful about doctors and anything said to me. If you aren’t seasoned and know me well. We have a problem Houston.

Anyway, I was home, annoyed, frustrated but determined over months to figure out what my body was trying to tell me. I went to sleep one night November 1st, 2016, woke up suddenly, about 2am feeling like I was stung by something on my lip. When I got out of bed and walked over to my bathroom I was shocked to see my lip in the mirror. My top lip was swollen.

I started searching my room frantically for a possible cause; chemical, physical etc. there was nothing to justify the swollen lips. I put ice on it but it only got bigger.

What was it??

The strange thing was the tingling in my throat and my breathing. I told myself to slow down, think…of course I couldn’t go back to sleep so I prepared for start of work. What you see me wearing below is how I dressed to go to work that day and hide the swelling.

I left work at 11:30 and took myself to the hospital as the breathing issue had only gotten worse. The swelling was also about 3-4 times the size when I first discovered it .

First question I got asked when I walked into triage was “what medications are you on” and “which one did you take recently” ? I was rushed immediately to emergency and intubated.

The Lisinopril is now listed as one of my allergies…the stomach cramps, vomiting and frequent trips to emergency rooms stopped abruptly. The best of all was no gall stone and no gall stone surgery required.

Now you understand why I am musing???
