Speak Life

Life and death

What you decide to share with anyone is entirely up to your discretion.

Just know this, not everyone has the capacity to secure your best interest. Only you have your own best interest at heart, and very possibly a small handful of heart folks.

Experience is a great teacher, in my opinion. I’ve seen how knowledge and information either positive or negative gives people a sense of power.

What they do with that power is oftentimes the interesting thing. Gossip, inform or just learn?

I present unfortunately, too many would gossip and oftentimes wrongly inform. The elect few are mindful enough to learn and use knowledge to effect change.

Web of Destruction

There is just something about tearing down others which subconsciously or consciously gives people a feeling of empowerment? Not sure if that is the right word, but it creates a destructive turbine effects which does not stop until it kills, steals or destroys.

Your web of deception can do more harm than good

Being mindful of people, friends, and family members…their secrets and sometimes carelessly shared information, and just information in general is important in maturity.

The power of life and death is in your hands or rather your tongue, so use it wisely and mindfully.

You do not need to tear another person down, regardless of what they’ve done to you or another. Know the forces with which you are dealing and either stay engaged or disengage. Leave it at that.

When you build up it creates the kind of energy in this world you oftentimes can’t see immediately, but it’s there…in the smiles on faces, new beginnings, lightness in a step, giving, hope, rewards , physical wellness, emotional and psychological outlook.

Change your outlook/perspective and change your life

Everything around you looks promising and you can cope with changes. You seek to go outdoors engage more and more with real people who are experiencing life, not synthetic dreams on social media. You are unique and purposeful, therefore you live as such, and it’s not necessary to speak negativity into anything, much less another person’s life.

Walking is easier than Limbo

Walking again

Now that the gruesome summer heat has subsided somewhat I’ve resumed my walking once again. Walking is absolutely hands down, one of my greatest passions. It’s not limbo so it’s quite easy. Don my walking clothes and I’m out the door.

Even though I’m musing while I’m walking. I do have a health app active on my phone which keeps tabs on my heart rate, peds per day, stairs climbed and distances or miles walked.

I check it daily and try to improve on the previous day. Sometimes however it’s just important for me to get out, get some good old vitamin D and walk.

I walk and I muse about everything. The soca, calypso, and reggae music in my ears beating out all the weeks and months events and helping me to synchronize my thoughts into some new thing for the next post or musing.

Shemika Charles Limbo Queen

Sometimes I write them and let them marinate for weeks. These are the ones which I go back and add tempo and more notes to enhance and enrich the readers experience.

My one hope is you enjoy the full experience of my walking. Not only does it improve my health, physical and mental well being, but it creates this great venue for relationship and exchange of ideas We’ve found with each other.

How Does Social Media fit into your world?

Social Media

I love social media!! Period!

The sheer ability to reach out to family, friends, long lost classmates, and even complete strangers who happen to share similar interests, over great distances, oceans, and even continents. I don’t know what advances have been made in space because I haven’t reviewed any NASA information. But, I will be soon since the very idea of being able to send instant message to space is revolutionary.

Negatives

While I know there are negatives- it can be time consuming, even disrupt interaction With real relationships in our lives. Some even spend so much time on social media, they have no real relationship. Others spend time filtering themselves so you really have no idea what’s real and what’s not.

Positives and Balance

But, it is important for me to highlight the positives and emphasize a balance can be met. Definitely!

Really? Yes, Really!!

I do not start my day with Social Media. That’s my biggest positive. When I open my eyes each day my praise and attention goes to my Higher Power…acknowledging and thanking God for my life, my love ones and all my blessings.

Secondly, I take care of myself, preparing myself for my day, getting chores done etc. if my chores aren’t done, I don’t reward myself with social media.

Thirdly, I take breaks from social media just to reboot, get perspective and just have me time. It may be a week or a few months. Depends how I feel. From time to time I may skip a couple days.

Lastly, social media isn’t all that important for me to disconnect from real people, real conversations and connections. I make a point to enjoy real life daily and not to have technology be all consuming . As Marshall McLuhan author of “Understanding Media” points out in the first chapter of his book :

Beyond what we think we are doing with technologies like smartphones, there is also the reality of what is happening to us when we use them. In short, what happens to us is the social message. This social “message” is also being sent to us at the same time as we use our devices for other purposes. We may not be initially aware of what is happening and how society is changing. But, over time, the social effects of the new technology seep, at least partially, into social awareness. Usually, this happens as older people point out to the younger ones how social habits have changed in their lifetime.

I’m a loner by nature who loves people. Abit of an oxymoron. But that’s my reality. I’m not a social person but I can be when called to be.

No Social Media – #unplug

Sometimes that little voice in my head gives me insight.

Only God

Call it intuition, instincts, I say it’s God. Whatever your words are for it.

But sometimes you need to clear all the junk and free your mind, your thoughts and ground zero yourself do what you can to jump start or elevate your thinking.

A good start is social media. Try it for one week. Do something else for one week and come back and tell me how you’ve evolved. How have the actual people in your life benefitted.

There is only one me

There’s only one me

I seem to reflect on this one thought ever so often.

The first reason being, it is a fact.

There’s only one me.

Secondly, the earlier in life we begin to understand, internalize and more importantly accept this fact, so much more fall into place for us and our authenticity allows us to have peace and many things suddenly make more sense. For one, you accept all of your imperfections and you relate and communicate as you view you view yourself, as a diamond, genuine and priceless. Secondly, how others view you does not fluster you because you are you to yourself and that’s uncompromising and refreshing.

Thirdly, there is a tremendous amount of power and freedom harnessed in acceptance of oneself as you are.

Fourthly, but not the last, those around you appreciate you more because you’ve accepted yourself, are comfortable within that framework of who you are and that makes you a more enjoyable and loveable person.

After that one, genuine, authentic you…there won’t be another. The mold can only be cut once so enjoy every moment you can so you can laugh and smile at yourself with others and at the memories each day. Not the end of your days.

Our Hair and Nail dilemma

credit to Desenho Afro Tumbler882ec09d889ac7894a5b72cd5a993b82

Industry

Just imagine my dissatisfaction at the fact that “almost” an entire industry is geared towards making money by sacrificing our nails and hair.

I started braiding my own hair maybe fifteen years ago, prior to that I would go to personal stylists who were exceptional but costly. I started learning how to do my own braided extensions and crochet braids. It was a journey because along the way I observed so much and was so dismayed about the industry trends concerning natural hair.

Community Initiatives Needed

Many black women own salons but many are refusing to bring their salon up to standard and keep the quality on par with competitors in other communities.  Plus everyone else who own services for the black woman,  wants our money, exploits the community and do not provide any services to rival the money we spend.

Asian businesses only resell hair and products, and they sell you anything. The don’t care if it is good for our hair or not. There is no education, just stock. Another prevelant and disturbing issue is blatant disrespect for women of color by the asian business owners, and refusal to empower the community they service with employment. More recently I’ve seen these businesses are in fact hiring women of color into their businesses. Kudos to them but it seems the employment is usually as a store clerk, very rarely positions in management, financials, etc. but it’s a start.  Let’s see some improvement please.

hair-products

I would like to see a vast improvement of this is the Asian beauty salons.   100% of their staff are generally Asians and most are freshly immigrated, barely any English and loads of back talking to customers in another language. As significant as we are to business owners financially, then customer service should be radically improved as well as employment to re-circulate in our own communities.

Personal Experiences

I’ve had to cease going to one salon in Brooklyn and more recently another here in Queens, NY due to substandard conditions, poor communication, hygiene and here’s the kicker, the stylist refusal to stop drilling my nails. I saw a marked weakening of my nails and inquired,  but was told it had something to do with my nails. So I decided to do a little experiment, as I’m primed to doing whenever hogwash is thrown my way, you see? So I went maybe six months or nine without salons. I removed all nail polish, filed my own nails and did clear only. Of course my nails restored to their original strength and beauty. Foolish me, wanting to have the glitz and fancy, went back again and behold my nails started weakening again. I brought it to the owner’s attention and again they refused to stop using drills.

Dangerous Tools

s-l1000

Drills increase productivity and profit. They can work faster and therefore turn over more customers and ultimately make more money bottom line. No one but the health department can enforce this madness.  I won’t get into the negative effects of the nail drying techniques using the acrylics and gel.  Consistent and long-term use of these ultraviolet light may not contradict our original intent, which is to take care of ourselves, look our best but these methods of application and drying may not be the most holistic.  I’ve attached a  link to research and educate on the dangers of the gel method and perhaps other alternatives to get beautiful nails  Potential dangers to Gel polish

But ladies just think about your nails and how much money you are pouring into having acrylics, gels and tips. Is it worth it? Try it for 30 60 days and free yourself of the financial burden of keeping your own nails beautiful – except under the surface your nails are a hot mess.

We just want to be naturally  beautiful

maxresdefault (1)

Our hair is an entirely different story.  The industry has to improve overall. These businesses if they are going to operate in our community have to be vested there as well. Only you can impact on this issue ladies.  Want change and better yet empower your community more.  Start by ensuring  your local businesses are hiring local girls, banking in your community and supporting community endeavors. You will see their true colors soon enough.  We can be beautiful without compromising our natural selves, while empowering our communities,  by ensuring some basic rules are established and followed.

Discipline as a Core Behavior

Discipline as a core behavior

I believe everything we do must demonstrate some form of discipline – working, school, resting and even having fun.

Blow with the Wind

Imagine going about life, no rhyme or reason. If we blow with the wind who knows where we will end up and more importantly “how” we will end up.   We  should certainly want to have control  over our destinations and our state of being. I want my hard earned work to mean something and not to be scattered with the wind and trampled on by passers by.

Control your destiny

wind blowing trees drawing

We all must have something which sustains is, whether that is a form of business or employment. Either or we have to have a disciplined approach to making money and consequently paying bills, keeping a roof over our heads, sustenance or feeding and nourishing our bodies. If we were not disciplined enough to work then none of the above would be possible and therefore we will cease to exist.

Same for school. Some of us are better and some are worse but in all we have to be disciplined to study, follow the course work, do exams, and interact and regurgitate in a classroom setting. This discipline also determines your professional outcome and potentially type of earning power.

Do-you-need-rest

Do you need rest too – Andy Lee

If you are a real disciplinarian, you would need a much needed break periodically. That in itself takes discipline. You must recognize your limits and allow yourself to break, relax and come back refreshed. This is what discipline looks like .

How we Deal with our Pain

Pain can be staggering if you aren’t equipped to handle it, because sometimes it isn’t just physical. It’s a mental state which can migrate to a physical state, causing much distress if you do not know how to manage how you think.

We can counter most of what how we think negatively with a positive but I’ve experienced personally such overwhelming negatives that it altered my chemical state. It could have been disastrous but I was equipped and sought help outside myself, I found ways to make my negatives positives. Small ways initially, insignificant things.

Whatever makes you happy and fires your brain use, as long as you aren’t creating more negatives for you or others.

Current Events affecting the African Communities.

DIASPORA

First of all, I say communities because there are so many, we are a diaspora.  We come from different places, with divergent issues.  I am from the Caribbean, but I know blacks from South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, America, etc.  We each have different issues and different perspectives.  My point of view of current events affecting the African communities is within the confines of America.

MENTAL SLAVERY

We are constantly being duped into believing we are :

  1. lazy
  2. without financial hope
  3. overly religious
  4. sports oriented and not academically inclined
  5. baby mamas and pimps
  6. incapable of thinking for ourselves, in other words we need a boss

Well, we know none of this is true.  There are exceptions of course, as with any other community of people, regardless of their ethnicity.

STEREOTYPES

These stereotypes are extremely dangerous for us as a people.  We have to be aware, educated, and conscious of what’s happening in the world around us.  We have to realize that we have just the same power, imagination, brain, and capabilities just like everyone else.  DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE.

ORDINARY THINGS

nothing in life can be achieved unless you put something into it.  If you are working without investing then that’s all you are doing, working.  Re-think that strategy perhaps.  Start a small investment fund, a business, even if it is home-based.    These  are a few ideas you can reap the benefits of, without burdening yourself.

Whatever religious affiliation you may have, ensure they are re-investing in your community and not taking your money elsewhere.  Look at the banks with which they are aligned.  Ask questions about where they are using the funds you’ve tithed and offered.

Education doesn’t necessarily have to be in the form of a college degree.  Read, explore, discuss, investigate, ask questions and don’t be afraid to open your mind while staying grounded to yourself and your community.  Don’t lose focus.

Demand more services for your own community, guess what?  It’s your community!  The politicians and powers that be, expect you to be silent.  Surprise them and use your voice whether that be vocally or with your pen and paper, computer, etc.  Just speak up for what you want.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Don’t let social media dissaude you from being a good citizen or person. Your life matters, make a difference and change the negativity.  We live in a world of good and bad, that’s just a fact.  Once we start changing, realigning, refocusing then the imageries on social media will also change.  We have to  remember where we came from and where we are going.  Where are you going without financial stability, credible finances and a strong foundation on which to stand.  Not just for yourself, but your future selves.

NETWORKING

This is the big N word for me.  We can’t get far if we aren’t resourced up, and in order to know where we are going, we need to follow the lead of great people. Reach out without malice to the black businesses and find out where you fit in.  Most are willing to give back but are afraid of  negativity.  They have to maneuver murky, shark infested waters, just like you and I, so let’s be tolerant and supportive.  Networking can sometimes be confusing, especially to individuals who don’t get the concept, and the long term benefits.  It’s about relationship and wealth building.  It’s not just about you now, more so than it is about you later.  Not the present you, but rather the future you – your children many generations from now.  Think about that.

Have you lived your best life today!? – 3

Communication
Some people like to talk and some to write or type. Whichever it may be, one should use it effectively for communicating true feelings, not nagging or manipulation. There is no place in relationships for either. Also never be evasive. If you don’t have an answer or are not ready to divulge one, simply say so. But,be prepared to have a ready answer available.   Never leave anyone hanging. This is just another way you live your best day by being true to yourself, yet reliable, trustworthy and earnest to others.
Purposely living

Simply living day by day without some kind of plan and purpose may seem ok in the short term. But not having real commitments and no real responsibilities, living willy nilly gets you no where.  No goals accomplished, no personal growth and nothing to look back on to appreciate.

Your day must be filled with purpose and it doesn’t hurt if you did at least one thing for yourself. Something as simple as giving yourself a day off from tasks. Just getting off your feet and resting your body, praising it for keeping you going, and please be thankful for your capabilities, what ever they may be.

Our lives must always have room for purpose and plans because without purpose there is no plans and vice versa. One cannot exist without the other. This is the beginning of your best day, taking care of you. If you don’t take care of you now it would be difficult for you to do it later.

Something  you have to consider is, who can you take care of you when you are down?   Your service to others will not be possible if you are incapacitated. So begin your best day with you.

Partners

Having a partner with whom you are committed is great but guess what?? How can you share your best self with them if you are not exercising your best self? Even your children if you have them, will suffer. You can’t love them the way you should or may want to. You can’t play with them if you are not at full capacity  when you do things with them. You are listless before the day is halfway finished. You are sleepy during the day, depressed maybe? Lost interest in some if not all activities. You are not eating nutritious meals so that your body is in balance. Next step weight gain . A big no no if you understand the human biorhythm. Weight spirals your body into another level of stress. Is this living your best day? Your best day should be balanced. Food and exercise definitely go together for a healthier you.

Balance

What does balance mean? What does balance look like? For each person it’s as unique as the person. It may mean taking a walk before you start your day. For some it may mean a jog, a swim, calisthenics, workout at your gym or if you please a great make out session with your partner. It’s entirely up to each person but you must absolutely start your best day this way. Kicking your metabolism into health zone also means balance so eating the right things, getting non sugary fluids into your temple is equally important to the balance you seek. It’s not rocket science. Your best day is elementary and easy to do if you can slow your roll and enjoy yourself . You only have one chance to take care of your body so the sooner you start, the better.
Grateful

Work and employment means something different for each person. Some people are content with salaries in the range of 25k and others need it to be 100k while others need it to be millions and that one percent in the billions. It is an individual ambition and one cannot look at the other and be critical of what satisfies monetary wise. Happiness is relative.  In order for us to live our best day  also includes enjoying the fruits of your labor and just being supremely grateful for gainful employment.

Joy and Peace

Having a hobby and enjoying doing something that lightens your heart and brings joy and peace to your spirit is essential. It doesn’t have to cost you.  Gardening, decorating, baking, cooking, hiking are things you can do with resources you already have. If you enjoy talking to friends and family this is great just be careful about too much personal information going out and also keeping conversations at a limit so you aren’t spending all your time sitting in one spot or just being a couch potato. Keep your body in tune with your mind because remember keeping your body in motion is essential to balance.
Love unique you

Loving yourself is just as potent as loving someone else. When we all realize this little secret in life we will love more passionately, hate less and respect ourselves and others. This is another aspect to our best day.

So as you can see, living your best day it isn’t one dimensional. It’s a multi dimensional purposeful life. We have to be aware and we have to strive for this each day. It cannot be well this person is like that so I’ll just be like that too. You can do much better than that. You are as unique as the sun and the moon. One comes up during the day and the other comes out at night. However, as unique as they each are, they do provide essential services we cannot live without. They are both unique and valuable. Just like you.

Begin with love in yourself, seek balance, take care of your body because you and you only have one body in this life. There aren’t any replacement part for the originals. Love like the sayings says there is no tomorrow because tomorrow may never come and finally believe in something which brings you joy to your best day.
